Choose to Challenge this International Women’s Day 2021

This year’s theme is Choose to Challenge. Join us by striking the #ChooseToChallenge pose and being period proud.

Celebrating Women’s Achievements Since 1911

For well over 100 years, International Women’s Day has been a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s also an opportunity to rally together to accelerate gender equality. Annually, March 8th is one of the most important days to:

  • Celebrate women's achievements
  • Raise awareness about women's equality
  • Lobby for accelerated gender parity
  • Fundraise for female-focused charities

So, are you ready to rally with us?!

International Women’s Day 2021 Theme

This year, the International Women’s Day theme is Choose to Challenge. A challenged world is an alert world and it’s down to all of us to call out inequality. By collectively challenging inequality, we can all help create an inclusive world.

"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
Gloria Steinem

How do Bloom & Nora Choose to Challenge?

Bloom & Nora pads are fluffy but fierce. Every day, our reusable period pads (and the people who wear them) help smash period taboo.

Breathable Pads Free From Perfumes

Go shopping for conventional period wear and you’ll find aisles filled with ‘freshening’ and ‘deodorising’ products. No other products designed to soak up blood come with added fragrance… so why is this the case with menstrual products? And how does this make women and girls feel about their periods?

The synthetic fragrances inside plastic sanitary pads can be made up of a cocktail of up to 3,000 chemicals including carcinogens, allergens, irritants and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Synthetic fragrances are also a common contact allergen with links to health problems such as bacterial vaginosis.

Dousing menstrual products in fragrances only perpetuates the idea that periods are somehow ‘unclean’. That’s why we Choose to Challenge this bias with our breathable reusable sanitary pads that are free from harmful chemicals.

Bloom & Nora reusable sanitary pads are Oeko-Tex-certified, guaranteeing that no harmful chemicals are around to disrupt the PH of your vagina. Plus, our breathable fabric sanitary towels keep clamminess and bacteria (and their associated whiffs) at bay.

Loud and Proud Reusable Menstrual Pads

Periods are one of the most natural things in the world and nothing to be embarrassed about, but there’s still a huge stigma surrounding them. Heartbreakingly, 48% of girls in the UK are embarrassed by their period.

We Choose to Challenge period taboo with our bright and beautiful cloth period pads. Fluffy but fierce, our washable sanitary pads are the secret weapon you and your knickers need to feel period proud.

By choosing to use reusables, you really engage with your period. Washing your period pads means getting up close and personal with your cycle… and you’ll soon feel period pride taking over any shame or embarrassment.

“I thought I’d feel a bit weird about using reusables and the process of rinsing them out…but the experience was very easy and pleasant.”
Lucy, Trustpilot

It’s not just the process of using reusable period products that help banish period stigma. Our patterned fabrics help too! We’ve purposefully created beautiful cloth sanitary towels so you can hang them on the line to dry with pride.

How Can You Choose to Challenge?

According to the World Economic Forum, sadly none of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes. In fact, it will take nearly 100 years for gender parity to be achieved. This means there’s urgent work to be done to help close the gap sooner. So how can you help?

This international Women’s Day, show your solidarity by using the #ChooseToChallenge hashtag and calling out aspects that are unhelpful to women.

  • Strike the #ChooseToChallenge pose with your hand high
  • Pledge to challenge inequality, call out bias and question stereotypes. An example is “I choose to challenge gender inequality by being proud of my period”.
